До 1990 г., согласно основным критериям[80], Югославия относилась к государствам реального социализма. Однако известная специфика югославского коммунизма[81] обусловила и его специфичную «имплозию» и иное посткоммунистическое развитие. Политическая система реального социализма не была низвергнута в результате массового бунта населения, как это произошло в других странах Восточной Европы, где коммунистический режим был упразднен, а «власти» и «оппозиции» пришлось сесть за стол переговоров. В Югославии бунта не было, и создается впечатление, что ритм политических преобразований скорее задали перемены в Восточной Европе, чем глубокий экономический и общественный кризис. Эти особые обстоятельства, связанные с кризисом государства, повлияли и на положение возникавших политических партий, на их характер, тип, политические и идейные установки. Поэтому вначале необходимо обозначить хотя бы некоторые особенности, присущие политической ситуации в Сербии и Югославии в конце 1980-х гг.
