В данной книге «коллективная память» понимается и как набор культурных норм, регулирующий практики сохранения и передачи памяти, и как корпус текстов и других видов символической репрезентации, которые конкретная культура производит, опираясь на эти нормы. Самые авторитетные тексты функционируют как воплощения «главного нарратива» и устанавливают действующие нормы для более широкого дискурса вспоминания. Термин «коллективная память» при этом не подразумевает однообразия индивидуальных воспоминаний или монолитности культуры. Разные группы в рамках более широкого общества могут иметь разные коллективные воспоминания, которые подкрепляют групповые идентичности, а собственные нарративы этих групп могут вступать в конфликт с «главным нарративом», преобладающим в культуре в целом.
