One evening, just as the sun was setting over the forest, two men stood in a big clearing, complaining loudly about the Normans. The older of the two men was a swineherd. He looked very wild with his thick hair and large beard, and in his belt he had a long knife and a horn. Around his neck he had a metal collar, like a dog’s collar, on which it said, ‘Gurth, the son of Beowulph, is born slave of Cedric of Rotherwood’.
The other man was a jester (другой мужчина был шутом; jester – шутник; шут). He wore a bright purple and yellow jacket (он был одет в яркую пурпурно-желтую куртку) and a hat with bells on it (и шляпу с бубенчиками /на ней/; bell – колокол; звонок, бубенчик).
